Media and Copyright Policies

Copyright definition: "The exclusive legal right, given to an originator or an assignee to print, publish, perform, film, or record literary, artistic, or musical material, and to authorize others to do the same."[1]

  1. All references, direct quotes, information sources, and images that are used in the Dam Safety Toolbox should be correctly cited, following the information outlined in the Guidelines for Inserting a Citation. References should include the title (document ID number, if applicable), author, and year of publication.

  2. Content in the Dam Safety Toolbox that is not an ASDSO publication must adhere to applicable copyright law such as the Copyright Act of 1976. Publicly available documents such as those published on websites of federal agencies and most state agencies may be uploaded to the Dam Safety Toolbox to allow users to download and view them.

  3. "Works in the public domain are those that are never protected by copyright (like facts or discoveries) or works whose term of protection has ended either because it expired or the owner did not satisfy a previously required formality. Currently, all pre-1926 U.S. works are in the public domain because copyright protection has expired for those works."[2]

  4. Images used for the Dam Safety Toolbox should also adhere to ASDSO's Copyright Guidelines. Images should be taken from public domain repositories such as Wikimedia Commons.

  5. ASDSO reserves the right to suspend edit suggestion privileges of contributors that purposely and continually suggest edits that plagiarize the work of others or violate copyright policy and law.
